Sermon 1: The Anatomy of a Stronghold
Subtitle: Identifying the “I’m Right” Mindset that Leads to Death.
Scripture: Romans 8:5-8; 2 Corinthians 10:4-5; Proverbs 14:12.
I. The Introduction: The Silent Drift
-
The Concept: Death in the Bible is rarely a sudden explosion; it is a “slow leak.”
-
The Key Verse: Romans 8:6 — “For the mind set on the flesh is death…”
-
The “Living Dead”: Explain that “Death” here is separation. Just as physical death is the soul separating from the body, spiritual death is the mind separating from the influence of God. You can be physically breathing but spiritually “flat lining” because your mindset (phronema) is tuned to a frequency God doesn’t inhabit.
II. Point 1: The Foundation — Justification and the “Reasonable” Excuse
-
The Scripture: Proverbs 14:12 — “There is a way that seems right to a man, but its end is the way of death.”
-
The “I’m Right” Trap: A stronghold always starts with a “reasonable” thought.
-
The Flesh says: “It’s not gossip; I’m just venting.”
-
The Flesh says: “I’m not greedy; I’m just being financially responsible.”
-
-
The Thought: When we rename our sins to make them sound like “wisdom,” we are laying the cornerstone of a stronghold. We aren’t just making a mistake; we are building a legal case for why we don’t need to change.
III. Point 2: The Walls — The Hostility of “Realism”
-
The Scripture: Romans 8:7 — “The mind set on the flesh is hostile to God…”
-
The Conflict: Use the Greek word Echthra (Enmity).
-
The “Realistic” Smokescreen: This is where the warfare happens. We often call fleshly thinking “being realistic.”
-
God says: “Forgive.” The Flesh says: “That’s not realistic; they’ll just hurt me again.”
-
God says: “Give.” The Flesh says: “That’s not realistic; look at the economy.”
-
-
The Hardening: Every time we choose “Our Realism” over “God’s Truth,” the wall gets higher. Hostility isn’t always shaking a fist at heaven; often, it is simply the cold, hard refusal to let God’s Word change our “realistic” plans.
IV. Point 3: The Roof — The Reprobate Mind (Adokimos)
-
The Scripture: Romans 1:28 Ephesians 4:18.
-
The Final Stage: When the walls of justification and the roof of hostility are complete, the “Stronghold” (Ochyrōma) is finished.
-
The Darkness: At this degree of death, the mind becomes Adokimos—worthless for its intended purpose. You lose the “taste” for spiritual things. You become alienated from the life of God because your “I’m Right” mindset has successfully blocked out the light. You are now a prisoner in a fortress you built yourself.
V. The Call to Action: Dismantling the First Stone
-
The Question: “What ‘realistic’ excuse are you using today to keep God at arm’s length?”
-
The Challenge: Strongholds are destroyed by Truth, not effort.
-
The Prayer: “Lord, show me where my ‘Rightness’ has become my ‘Blindness.'”
