The Indwelling Life — God Lives Here
Main Idea: Christianity is no longer about a God who dwells in a distant temple made of stone, but a God who makes His permanent home inside human hearts.
Introduction In the Old Testament, the presence of God was localized. It burned in a bush, hovered over a tabernacle, and filled the Holy of Holies inside the Jerusalem temple. If an ordinary Israelite wanted to experience the raw presence of God, they had to go to a specific place, jump through specific ritual hoops, and keep a respectful distance.
When Jesus tore the temple veil from top to bottom, everything changed. God didn’t just relocate closer to us—He moved into us.
Point 1: From a Tent of Skin to a Temple of the Spirit
-
The Text: 1 Corinthians 3:16; Ezekiel 36:26–27
-
The Truth: Paul writes something that would have sounded blasphemous to an ancient ear: “Do you not know that you yourselves are God’s temple and that God’s Spirit dwells in your midst?” God traded buildings of cedar and gold for bodies of flesh and bone.
-
Application: This changes how we view our physical bodies, our habits, and our private lives. You take the literal presence of God with you into your office, your car, your struggles, and your celebrations. You never walk into a room alone.
Point 2: Sealed and Secured
-
The Text: Ephesians 1:13–14; Romans 8:9–11
-
The Truth: When you placed your trust in Christ, the Holy Spirit didn’t just visit you; He sealed you. In the ancient world, a king’s signet ring pressed into wax meant absolute ownership and security. The indwelling Spirit is God’s down payment—a guarantee that He will finish what He started in you.
-
Application: You don’t have to perform to earn God’s permanent residence. You are secure. The battle shifts from trying to get God to love you to learning how to yield to the Love already residing within you.
Conclusion & Invitation Stop treating God like a visiting dignitary who stops by on Sundays. Recognize the sacred real estate of your own heart. Where do you need to surrender control of “rooms” in your life that you’ve kept locked away from Him?
