The gifts of the Holy Spirit, often referred to as spiritual gifts or charisma (grace gifts) are special abilities given by God to believers to build up the church, serve others, and demonstrate His presence and power.
What Are the Gifts of the Holy Spirit?
The New Testament outlines various spiritual gifts across several key passages (primarily 1 Corinthians 12, Romans 12, and Ephesians 4). While scholars group them in slightly different ways, they generally fall into three functional categories:
- Revelation Gifts (To Know):
- Word of Wisdom: Divine insight into how to apply truth or handle a specific situation.
- Word of Knowledge: A sudden understanding of a fact, situation, or truth revealed by the Spirit.
- Discerning of Spirits: The ability to distinguish between the Holy Spirit, demonic influence, or human motives.
- Power Gifts (To Do):
- Faith: A supernatural confidence to trust God for extraordinary outcomes beyond ordinary belief.
- Gifts of Healing: Gods power operating to bring physical, emotional, or spiritual wholeness.
- Working of Miracles: Gods supernatural intervention overriding natural laws.
- Utterance or Speaking Gifts (To Say):
- Prophecy: Speaking forth Gods heart, encouragement, or truth for a specific moment (1 Corinthians 14:3 notes it is for “edification, exhortation, and comfort”).
- Different Kinds of Tongues: Speaking in a language unknown to the speaker, used in private devotion or public assembly.
- Interpretation of Tongues: The Spirit-given ability to translate a message spoken in tongues for the benefit of the church.
- Service & Leadership Gifts (To Serve):
- Serving/Ministry, Encouragement (Exhortation), Giving, Leadership/Administration, and Mercy (Romans 12:6-8).
- Apostles, Prophets, Evangelists, Pastors, and Teachers (Ephesians 4:11).
How Are They Supposed to Be Used?
Scripture gives clear guidelines on the purpose and order for operating in spiritual gifts:
1. For Mutual Edification (Not Personal Display)
Spiritual gifts are never meant as badges of personal spirituality or superiority. As 1 Corinthians 12:7 states, “Now to each one the manifestation of the Spirit is given for the common good.” Their primary purpose is to strengthen, encourage, and build up others.
2. Rooted in Love
The famous “love chapter” (1 Corinthians 13) is placed directly between two chapters on spiritual gifts (1 Corinthians 12 and 14). Paul makes it clear that using supernatural gifts without love makes them spiritually worthless noisy cymbals. Love must be the motive behind every gift.
3. In Order and Peace
In 1 Corinthians 14:40, the Bible instructs that “everything should be done in a fitting and orderly way.” Because God is a God of peace and not confusion, spiritual gifts should operate in a way that respects leadership, maintains harmony, and keeps the focus on Christ.
4. Subject to Discernment and Testing
Operating in a gift requires humility. Paul writes in 1 Thessalonians 5:19-21 to test all prophecy and hold fast to what is good. Gifts must always align with the authority of Scripture and be evaluated by mature believers.
5. As Good Stewards of Grace
1 Peter 4:10 summarizes how every believer should approach their gifts: “Each of you should use whatever gift you have received to serve others, as faithful stewards of God’s grace in its various forms.”
Father, as we bow our hearts before You, we acknowledge that every good and perfect gift comes from Your hands. We thank You for the presence of Your Holy Spirit and for the gracious gifts You have poured out upon Your Church.
Forgive us for any time we have relied on our own strength, sought our own glory, or taken for granted the powerful work of Your Spirit. Strip away all pride, self-interest, and pretense, Lord.
We ask that You awaken and align every gift within us according to Your perfect will. Where You have given wisdom, knowledge, or discernment, grant us the humility to listen. Where You have granted faith, healing, or miracles, keep our eyes fixed entirely on Christ. Where You have granted speech, prophecy, or encouragement, let our words be seasoned with Your grace and rooted deeply in love.
Help us to hold these gifts with open and humble hands—never for personal display, but always for the edification of Your people, the unity of the body, and the comfort of the broken. May everything done in our lives and in Your church be marked by peace, order, and genuine love.
Send us out now as faithful stewards of Your grace. Let Your Spirit move freely through us this week, that in all things, Jesus Christ may be lifted up and glorified.
In His holy and precious name we pray,
Amen.
