The Ignored God — Meeting the Third Person
Main Idea: The Holy Spirit is not an abstract force, a theological afterthought, or an impersonal energy field; He is the personal, present God who desires deep communion with you.
Introduction Imagine being married for ten years, living in the same house, sharing the same bills, and raising children together, yet you refer to your spouse as “the roommate” or “that presence in the hall.” Tragically, this is how many Christians treat the Holy Spirit. We talk endlessly about God the Father and we center our devotion on Jesus the Son, but when it comes to the Holy Spirit, we treat Him like an invisible background character in our faith.
Yet, Scripture presents Him as co-equal, co-eternal, and intimately involved in our lives from the very beginning. If we ignore the Spirit, we are trying to live the Christian life on spiritual battery saver, missing out on the very power that brings God’s presence near.
Point 1: The Spirit is a Person, Not a Power
-
The Text: John 14:16–17; Acts 5:3–4
-
The Truth: In our culture, we often view the Spirit like “the Force” in Star Wars—an impersonal energy we can manipulate or tap into for our own benefit. But Jesus deliberately uses personal pronouns for the Spirit (“He will guide you,” “He will dwell with you”).
-
Application: You cannot have a relationship with an energy field, but you can grieve, resist, or fellowship with a Person. The Spirit has a mind, a will, and emotions (Ephesians 4:30 warns us not to grieve Him). Shifting from viewing Him as a “what” to a “Who” transforms prayer from a monologue into a dialogue.
Point 2: Present Since the First Breath
-
The Text: Genesis 1:1–2; Psalm 139:7–8
-
The Truth: Look at the very dawn of creation. While God the Father speaks the universe into existence, the Spirit of God is hovering over the dark, chaotic waters, ready to shape, bring order, and breathe life. He is not a New Testament innovation; He is the eternal breath of God.
-
Application: Just as He brought physical creation out of chaos, the Spirit is in the business of entering the chaotic, dark places of your life today to bring order, beauty, and resurrection.
Conclusion & Invitation Are you living as though your faith is a solo act? Today, invite the ignored God out of the shadows of your theology. Acknowledge His presence, speak to Him, and open your heart to the third person of the Trinity.
