The Deep calls to deep
With Bishop Ronald K. Powell
“Deep calls to deep in the roar of your waterfalls; all your waves and breakers have swept over me” (Psalm 42:7).
What does this verse mean?
- Last time I spoke was from Hebrews 12. I reminded you that when storms come in this last hour that our God is not punishing us, rather He is preparing us for His return.
- This has happened in every Generation. The psalmist expresses a cry from the heart of God’s people during a time of trouble. What exactly does it mean that “deep calls to deep?”
There is some question as to the setting of Psalm 42. The author seems to have been outside of Jerusalem and unable to return. He mentions how he “used to go to the house of God . . . with shouts of joy” (verse 4), he speaks as if he is east of the Jordan River (verse 6), and he hears the taunting of an enemy (verse 10). Most likely, the setting is this: the sons of Korah—the leaders of tabernacle worship to whom the psalm is attributed—were accompanying King David as he was driven from Jerusalem by his rebellious son Absalom (2 Samuel 15). As David and those faithful to him fled for their lives, they looked back in sadness at their home of Jerusalem. Psalm 42 is a record of their thoughts in that time of exile.
THE SECRET PLACE:
NEW WINE FOR NEW WINE SKINS
21 No one sews a piece of unshrunk cloth on an old garment. If he does, the patch tears away from it, the new from the old, and a worse tear is made. 22 And no one puts new wine into old wineskins. If he does, the wine will burst the skins—and the wine is destroyed, and so are the skins. But new wine is for fresh wineskins.”
Jesus Is Lord of the Sabbath
23 One Sabbath he was going through the grainfields, and as they made their way, his disciples began to pluck heads of grain. 24 And the Pharisees were saying to him, “Look, why are they doing what is not lawful on the Sabbath?” 25 And he said to them, “Have you never read what David did, when he was in need and was hungry, he and those who were with him: 26 how he entered the house of God, in the time of Abiathar the high priest, and ate the bread of the Presence, which it is not lawful for any but the priests to eat, and also gave it to those who were with him?”
NEW BIRTH BRINGS US INTO THE NEW REALM OF THE SPIRIT!
9 But, as it is written,“What no eye has seen, nor ear heard, nor the heart of man imagined, what God has prepared for those who love him”10 these things God has revealed to us through the Spirit. For the Spirit searches everything, even the depths of God.
The Spirit searches the deep things of God.
- The Spirit gives God access to the secret places of your life. (Most particularly during hardships)
- The Holy Spirit will also bring us into the secret place of the Father.
If we desire the deep things to be revealed, we must allow God into our secret place…the place where we are transparent, the real you. the secret you, the unpretentious you. A place where the holy light of God can expose all that is unpleasing and cleansing can begin.
- God’s purpose in this is our surrender to all that is God.
- Allowing Jesus to be Crowned King over our affections and imaginations.
26 Likewise the Spirit helps us in our weakness. For we do not know what to pray for as we ought, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us with groanings too deep for words. 27 And he who searches hearts knows what is the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for the saints according to the will of God.
10 these things God has revealed to us through the Spirit. For the Spirit searches everything, even the depths of God. 11 For who knows a person’s thoughts except the spirit of that person, which is in him? So also no one comprehends the thoughts of God except the Spirit of God.
- The Spirit of God Searches all things and knows all things, and when allowed will reveal all things.
- The Spirit knows us… the deep (secret things in you. Nothing is hidden.
- The Holy Spirit perfectly intercedes for us and when we allow Him too He will lead us into deep and perfect things of God.
- This will transform and perfect you.
- God is going to give you a new garment not a patched one. a new wine skin that contains the New Wine of God. God desires that we lay the old hidden self on the altar and let it be consumed in His presence.
The Deep calls to the deep
- God is calling you into His cleansing presence to reveal Himself to you that you might be changed from His Glory to Glory.
- Holy surrender your old man in His presence to receive the newness of life.
14 Strive for peace with everyone, and for the holiness without which no one will see the Lord. 15 See to it that no one fails to obtain the grace of God; that no “root of bitterness” springs up and causes trouble, and by it many become defiled;
- Release all Bitterness and Hurt. Forgiving as Christ has forgiven you. (Jesus said on the cross: Father forgive them for they know not what they do.
- Walk in the Spirit and you will not fulfill the deeds, desires, actions of the flesh.
20 My son, be attentive to my words;
incline your ear to my sayings.
21 Let them not escape from your sight;
keep them within your heart.
22 For they are life to those who find them,
and healing to all their flesh.
23 Keep your heart with all vigilance,
for from it flow the springs of life.
Life is the out flow of a perfected heart
Issues of Life
- Be healed of your hurts, Bitterness, and forgive the ignorance of man as Jesus did. Only then can you walk in the Spirit and not give in to fleshly / worldly ways.
- When we are healed of the past wounds we become a light in the darkness of others.
Transformation:
- Release of the the past hurts allows us to see god as He is and the transforming power makes us into his likeness and image.
- The power of God flows into a surrendered heart not the head.
In closing:
You can know of God and not know Him.
22 On that day many will say to me, ‘Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name, and cast out demons in your name, and do many mighty works in your name?’ 23 And then will I declare to them, ‘I never knew you; depart from me, you workers of lawlessness.’
Build Your House on the Rock
24 “Everyone then who hears these words of mine and does them will be like a wise man who built his house on the rock.
8 Depart from me, all you workers of evil,
for the Lord has heard the sound of my weeping.
115 Depart from me, you evildoers,
that I may keep the commandments of my God.
27 But he will say, ‘I tell you, I do not know where you come from. Depart from me, all you workers of evil!’
25 When once the master of the house has risen and shut the door, and you begin to stand outside and to knock at the door, saying, ‘Lord, open to us,’ then he will answer you, ‘I do not know where you come from.’
41 “Then he will say to those on his left, ‘Depart from me, you cursed, into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels.
7 “Judge not, that you be not judged. 2 For with the judgment you pronounce you will be judged, and with the measure you use it will be measured to you. 3 Why do you see the speck that is in your brother’s eye, but do not notice the log that is in your own eye?
6 “Do not give dogs what is holy, and do not throw your pearls before pigs, lest they trample them underfoot and turn to attack you.
12 “So whatever you wish that others would do to you, do also to them, for this is the Law and the Prophets.
13 “Enter by the narrow gate. For the gate is wide and the way is easy that leads to destruction, and those who enter by it are many. 14 For the gate is narrow and the way is hard that leads to life, and those who find it are few.
